Horse Chestnut & Grape Seed

Feature Summary

Varicose veins are often caused by enzymes that destroy the proteoglycan network in the veins, which reduces the strength of vessel walls, causing the veins to dilate and pool blood. Aescin (escin), a triterpenoid isolated from horse chestnut, helps to inhibit these damaging enzymes, increases the tone of the veins and improves return blood flow to the heart.

Grape seed extract works synergistically with horse chestnut to strengthen blood vessels, reduce bruising and inhibit the tendency to develop varicose veins. The helpful flavonoids in grape seed extract, called proanthocyanidins or leucoanthocyanins, are superior antioxidants, protecting capillaries, veins and arteries from free radical damage. Grape seed flavonoids enhance the performance of vitamin C, essential for collagen formation.

Horse Chestnut Extract (Aesculus hippocastanum)
(seed) (18% Aescin [Triterpene Glycoside]).........300 mg
GrapeSeedRich^® Grape Seed Extract (Vitis vinifera)
(seed) (95% Polyphenols)......................................50 mg

Non-medicinal Ingredients

Rice powder, gelatin capsule (gelatin, purified water), vegetable grade magnesium stearate (lubricant), silica.

Recommended Adult Dose

1 capsule 2 times daily or as directed by a health care practitioner. Keep out of the reach of children.

Contraindications

• None known for horse chestnut.
• Although the German Commission E monograph states no contraindications for horse chestnut, other sources state that horse chestnut should be avoided by persons with existing renal or hepatic impairment.
• Horse chestnut may also interfere with anticoagulant drugs such as Coumarin.
• Persons using these drugs may want to check with their health care practitioner prior to use.

Additional Information

Children: Horse chestnut seed preparations are not recommended for children under the age of twelve years unless directed by a health care practitioner. Children over the age of twelve can take the adult dosage.

Pregnancy and Nursing: Horse chestnut preparations have not been evaluated for use during pregnancy and lactation and should not be used by pregnant or lactating women.

Seniors: No special precautions are known.
