Omega-3 fatty acids are important to insulin resistance for several reasons, heart disease, cellular integrity and the prevention of neuropathy among them. Both DHA and GLA (gamma linolenic acid) are often recommended to people living with blood glucose imbalances as both have been shown to improve and prevent insulin resistance related neuropathy.

Dietary fat determines cell membrane composition and a lack of omega-3 fatty acids leads to reduced membrane fluidity, which in turn causes reduced insulin binding to receptors on cellular membranes and/or reduced insulin action. GLA has been shown to improve and prevent insulin resistance related neuropathy. Insulin resistance is associated with a substantial disturbance in essential fatty acid metabolism. One of the key disturbances is the impairment in the process of converting linoleic acid to GLA. As a result, it provides highly concentrated GLA derived from organic borage oil that can bypass some of this disturbance.

Contraindications

May reduce platelet stickiness.

People using anticoagulants such as warfarin (Coumadin) or platelet-inhibiting drugs (aspirin, ticlopidine/Ticlid) should monitor their blood regularly to reduce the risk of bleeding from excessive thinning of the blood. Consult your health care practitioner prior to use.

Individuals with diabetes must monitor blood sugar levels closely if electing to use fish oil supplements.

Elevations in blood sugar and cholesterol levels have occurred in some diabetics taking fish oils supplements.

Long-term users should also supplement with the fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin E when using any polyunsaturated fatty acids.
