Homocysteine Formula

Feature Summary

Homocysteine is formed when the body breaks down the amino acid, methionine (found in meat and dairy products). Without adequate levels of folate, vitamins B6 and B12, the homocysteine builds up in the blood rather than being further metabolized back into methionine (a process called remethylation) or other harmless substances for elimination through the kidneys. While normal levels of homocysteine help build and maintain body tissues, too much homocysteine causes blood platelets to clump together and damage the lining of arteries, leading to heart attacks and strokes. High homocysteine levels are also suspect in Alzheimer's disease, chronic fatigue syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis.

Homocysteine Formula is designed to provide the right balance and amounts of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 to bring the levels down.

Ingredients

Each capsule contains:
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride)........................................50 mg
Folic acid (folate)..................................................................400 mcg
Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin)..............................................125 mcg

Recommended Adult Dose

2 capsules daily or as directed by a health care practitioner. Keep out of reach of children.

Contraindications

• None known.

Drug Interactions

Children: Although this formula is very safe, there is at present no appropriate need to lower homocysteine levels in children unless suggested by their health care practitioner. It is preferable for children to get their complete multivitamins through a healthy diet and a supplement designed for a child's specific needs.

Pregnancy and Nursing: Although these three B vitamins are very important for pregnant women, it is preferable for pregnant women to take a prenatal multivitamin that is more complete and is designed specifically for the nutritional needs of pregnancy.
