L-Tyrosine is an amino acid (building block unit of protein) that is important to the structure of almost all proteins in the body and is also converted into several neurotransmitters, including L-dopa, dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine. L-Tyrosine, through its effect on neurotransmitters, may affect several health conditions, including depression and fatigue.

Another tool to fight depression - low brain levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine may contribute to depression. Several double-blind studies have shown tyrosine supplementation can help some people with depression. At a dosage of 100 mg per kilogram (2.2 pounds) body weight, one double-blind study found that L-Tyrosine demonstrated a rate of response (60-70%) typical of most major antidepressants without side effects.

Helps combat fatigue - L-Tyrosine supplementation may help in improving energy levels and is being investigated by the U.S. military as a potential "countermeasure to performance decrement in military sustained operations." The results indicated that tyrosine supplementation was associated with a significantly smaller decline in memory-related tasks and hand-eye coordination. It also demonstrated reductions in feelings of sleepiness and the intensity of fatigue-related symptoms. Unlike conventional stimulants, L-Tyrosine exerted absolutely no inhibition of sleep, elevation in blood pressure and pulse, or other negative effects.
